Social Media: What's in it for me?

Social Media: What's in it for Me?

Social media is revolutionizing the Internet. In 2009, time using social media doubled from the year before. But, what is it? It is a type of media that promotes social interactions and network building. You can think of it as a place, albeit virtual, to spend time, socialize, share information and learn more about those around you. Since it is digital, you can tap into it through a website, email or cellular phone. According to Nielson Online, online social networks and blogs are now the fourth most popular online category - ahead of personal e-mail.

If you have kids, grandkids or friends, for that matter, you will want to learn more about this social phenomenon. You can use social media to share photos or thoughts with friends, find a new job or career, keep tabs on your children or grandchildren, and, much more. If you aren't familiar with some of the more popular social media sites, take a look at our toolbox on the right. It is worth your while to learn more about these types of sites:

  •   Facebook -- Catch up with friends and family.
